Men’s golf team finishes up at BYU Ping Cougar Classic

The Cowboy golf team finished strong at the BYU Ping Cougar Classic this past weekend. Wyoming notched the lowest score of the day with a 285, 3 under par.

With this score the Cowboys recorded a three round score of 868. This impressive score happened to be their lowest recorded three round score since September 9, 2013 at the USAF Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This score boosted the Pokes position to finish in the 6th place spot out of the 11-team playing field.

“The team played well today and I was very happy with the effort,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “I was proud that the team had the best round of today and was the only team under-par.”

A big reason for the Pokes strong finish was sophomore Ryan Wallen’s stellar performance throughout the tournament. Wallen concluded the tournament with a third round score of 70. With this score of 2 under par Wallen concluded the tournament with a score of 212 for all three rounds landing him tied for 3rd out of the 60 man playing field. This 3rd place finish gave Wallen his 7th top 25 finish in his career here at Wyoming.

Junior Kamrin Allen was hot on Wallen’s heels finishing 3 strokes behind. His total score after three rounds of 215 tied him for the 14th spot overall. Like Wallen, Allen is no stranger to top 25 finishes. His 14th place finish was his 10th top 25 finish of his career. Following Allen was freshman Drew McCullough. He had an impressive 1st and 2nd round of 73 and 68, unfortunately in the last round he recorded his worst score of 81 which landed him tied for 36th place.

Golfing individually for Wyoming was redshirt freshman Arron Lickteig. Lickteig was consistent throughout the tournament recording scores of 74, 75 and 74. These modest scores gave him a total of 223 tying for 41st place. Closing up the tournament for the Pokes were fellow freshman Quintin Pope and Glenn Workman. The last round proved to be a career best for Quinton Pope who recorded a 69 to complete the tournament. The tally of Pope’s three rounds gave him a 230, placing 53rd. Workman finished out the tournament with a total score of 231 tying for 54th place overall.

With the conclusion of the BYU Ping Cougar Classic, the team will now prepare to compete in the Mountain West Tournament in Tuscan, Arizona at the end of the season.
