Her Campus is the newest publication at the University of Wyoming and they have a lot of aspirations for what they want to do for the students of UW.
Her Campus is a national publication that’s by, for and about college women.
Her Campus at UW was started by Lauren McClure, a senior studying marketing and editor in chief of Her Campus, and grew with a cast of writers. Her Campus at UW was officially launched Sept. 22.
Sara Ott, a junior studying Business Administration and Marketing and co-campus correspondent for Her Campus, said each college campus can have their own chapter where girls who attend that campus can write articles particularly for their campus while being on a national forum.
“We are trying to reach girls who may not get this opportunity because of the limited forums for our writing to get out there on campus,” Ott said. “Our publication strives to show what student life is like at the University of Wyoming in an accurate fashion.”
Even though the UW chapter just recently started on campus it has already gotten good feedback and has its own website along with links to their own personal Facebook account.
Each time an article is published, Her Campus shares it on their Facebook page, Her Campus U Wyoming. These articles on Facebook have been reaching about 2,000 people and the most popular articles have been getting up to 200 shares.
McClure said people only spend about thirty seconds looking at an article but an average of 11 minutes looking at the Her Campus page.
“This past week we had a huge increase in viewers, with seven new users and 93 unique page views,” McClure said. “This is a big increase from our first week and I am looking forward to seeing our readership staying on this steady incline!”
McClure said UW Her Campus is one of over 280 chapters of Her Campus worldwide and all of the writers share a common goal: to serve and inspire college women.
McClure said Her Campus could provide women with a career-launching point by offering them a place on staff or giving them a place to peruse some funny articles in the wee hours of the morning on a study break.
Her Campus at UW has reoccurring pieces that include campus cuties, campus celebrities and pieces specifically tailored to any reader at UW.
The publication is just about at its one-month mark at UW and it continues to see steady growth, not only in its publications views and shares, but also in its writer’s team.
Meg Weldon, a senior studying marketing and treasurer for Her Campus, said the current staff of Her Campus is excited about getting to write for a publication that can be relatable to a host of women and many others.
“I love being able to write relatable articles for students. Her Campus is a great way for people to get involved and share their thoughts on all things UW,” Weldon said. “It’s a great creative outlet for students.”
Weldon said it is challenging to be part of something that is so popular nation-wide and said she finds it intimidating knowing their writing is out there for the world to see.
Her Campus has already written pieces on many notable women on campus including Vice President of ASUW, Emily Kath and Entrepreneur Tabatha Briscoe.
They also have interviews with previous Wyoming basketball star, Larry Nance Jr., Football Star Chris Prosinski and Alpha Kappa Psi President Seth Marlow.
They also touch on topics like fall in Laramie, sports culture and not being country in Wyoming, along with many other topics concerning UW.
Her Campus is still recruiting writers but already has a solid staff which they hope will continue to grow as writers and encourage new ones to join the organization.
