Cowgirls soccer fall short to Lobos 3-2

The Wyoming Cowgirls Soccer team was defeated by the New Mexico Lobos by a score of 3-2 this afternoon at Louis S. Madrid

The Cowgirls honored their five graduating seniors in today’s match; Goal Keeper Georgia Rowntree, Mid Fielder Summer Halle, Defender Claire Parker, Forward Alisha Bass and Defender Tristan Tyrell all contributed in today’s performance and were joined by their parents in celebration of their years as Cowgirl soccer players.

Wyoming now, (7-9-2, MW 3-6-1) fell short in their battle against the Lobos (12-6-0, MW 7-3-0) this afternoon, that started off with an early own goal seeing the back of the net in the 7’ min. The Cowgirls experienced an injury in the 10’ min from Jessie Gentle, with the result of a potential dislocation of the knee.

The Lobos continued to pressure the Cowgirls throughout the duration of the half with the majority of their presence on the attacking half.

The Cowgirls immediately started the second half on a positive note by tying up the score when the ball met the back of the net on a low hard shot by Annika Clayton in the 48’ minute. The short-lived 1-1 score was stolen by the Lobos in the 51’ min by a shot that bounced off the leg of a cowgirl defender, scored by center midfielder, Eileen Zendejas.

The trailing Cowgirls relentlessly pressured the Lobos with the majority of the possession and shots on goal in their favor.

Despite their best efforts, the Cowgirls were scored on again making it 3-1 in the 67’ min after a flip throw to the center met the head of No. 7 sophomore, Jessie Hix.

The Cowgirls refusing to give up, pressed the Lobos defense in the attacking third with two consecutive corner kicks and across that were all punched out by the opposing keeper.

A late goal in the 84 minute by No. 7 Brittney Stark shortened the gap in the score to 3-2. Stark scored her eighth goal of the season making her the top scorer of the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls fell into seventh place of conference standings which concluded their chances of qualifying for the MW Tournament.  The last game in the 2017 Cowgirls Soccer season will be next Friday against their conference rivals, Colorado State, in Fort Collins, Colorado.
