Recap of Wednesday’s homecoming events

The Tailgate, pep rally, sing competition and dance boosted homecoming spirit.

Wednesday evening the Homecoming events continued with the tailgate over at Washakie dining center and on the Washakie Green. The tailgate had everything fall related while also incorporating a series of tailgating traditions.

These traditions included live music, a barbeque, caramel apples around every corner and many other enjoyable goodies.

Washakie was completely transformed to show its poke pride and included elaborate decorations such as yellow bandanas all over the tables with small flower pots as center pieces. All the tables and places scattered around had pumpkins and other small fall decorations, as well as a few pairs of Cowboy boots.

Outside there were three tents, one of which was filled with candy apples in the shape of UW, another was home to the live music, and the other was where the barbeque sandwiches and chili were held.

The pep rally kicked off slightly later than anticipated yet people still filed out of Washakie from the tailgate and followed in suit of the marching band and color guard as they headed to the homecoming sing. Once the band arrived, they marched into the Auditorium and helped play the alma mater and the Ragtime Cowboy Joe song.

The Homecoming sing began with the Universities very own Happy Jacks; they kicked off the evening with their own renditions of a Taylor Swift and the Black-Eyed Peas.

Then many of our campus RSO’s and Greek life participated in this event all of which put their own spin on their musically renditions.

The Chi Omega ladies made a mash up of 1980s music, that they changed some of the lyrics of very popular songs to focus solely on the Homecoming game.

This was done by several other groups. There were several very serious groups that performed, and many very entertaining groups that all made the audience wanting more. At the end of the evening the winners were announced. The overall winners were the guys from Sigma Chi.

“I competed in Homecoming sing with my sorority. It was a great way to bond with my sisters. I loved getting to see the other teams perform and see what they had been working on all this time,” Chi Omega sorority sister, Kerry Adams said. “It was an awesome experience to have some fun and get a little competitive!”

Finally, to conclude the events of the evening the Homecoming swing dance began in the Union ballroom. It started with some instructing and teaching from the Country Swing Dance Club here on campus who were hosting the event.

After an hour or so of instruction in the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, the dance officially began. There was live music and tons of people swing dancing and having a great time.

“The homecoming dance was really fun to dance to a live band which helped the overall atmosphere and it was so much different from other homecoming dances because it wasn’t formal,” advanced level swing dancer, Jessika Nelson said. “And people just came to have a good time and actually swing dance.”

Wednesday night was packed full of events and activities for students to enjoy and get involved on campus.

Now that most of the events have concluded for Homecoming week, let’s get out there and show our school spirit for our Cowboy football team at the Homecoming game this Saturday at 5 p.m.
