Eat healthy and support local businesses

A lot of people think eating out might mess with their resolution, but the good thing is many of the local businesses in Laramie are introducing some healthy cuisine to help people stick with their New Year’s healthy eating resolution.

Night Heron Books and Coffeehouse has a lot of new things coming for this year. One of the big things is they started brewing their own Kombucha with different flavors.

“We started brewing our own Kombucha,” Ken Koschnitzki, co-owner of Night Heron Books and Coffeehouse said. “We have varieties of flavors, we have hibiscus, rose heap tea, chai blend that’s coming out, lavender blueberry.”

Along with Night Heron, Big Hollow Food Coop is also helping people to stay healthy.

“[We] also have a really great section of kombucha, which is a really great probiotic fermented tea,” Kyra Marlatt, Cashier at Big Hollow Food Co-Op, said. “It is really great for gut health and helps support the immune system as well. For healthy eating habits, we provide really great fresh organic produce and it is readily available. We do have different seasonal produces so it’s the freshest as it could possibly be.”

“We also started making a new project called Night Heron Labs where we are making our own hot sauce,” Koschnitzki said. “Pretty experimental but fun to do, we are selling that in the store as well. We have green hot sauce coming out next week.”

Anong Larsen from Anong’s Thai Cuisine, who has been running the restaurant for the past 10 years, has also brought some healthy changes to their menu.

Similarly, Sweet Melissa’s and Front Street Tavern, a vegetarian restaurant in downtown Laramie that changes its menu frequently each year has added some innovative nutritious ideas.

“We do innovative food. We change our menu quite frequently normally like three times a year,” Jenny Drew, bartender at Sweet Melissa’s and Front Street Traven, said.

When it comes to eating healthy people hesitate to eat out. But, these local businesses are constantly pushing their boundaries to serve fresh and healthy recipes to their customers and constantly encouraging their chiefs to add a homey touch in it.

“So, this year we push more creativity, more innovation in food. We recently got into deserts and pastries like that,” Drew said.

They have brought back their four years old recipe, ‘Seitan,’ on the menu.

“Seitan is like a protein substitute which we make in-house. We didn’t like our old recipe so we kind of re-invented it,” Drew said.

The new year, new you healthy eating resolution has not only changed an individual but has also changed the local food businesses in Laramie to stick with their New Year’s resolution to serve people with in-house nutrition and health benefits.
