ASUW update: New legislation introduced

The most recent meeting of the ASUW Senate saw no debate, but it did see a collection of new bills and resolutions introduced that will be talked about in committees and considered by the individual senators before the next meeting of the senate.

The first piece of legislation introduced was Senate Bill No. 2603 ASUW Support of Fraternity/Sorority Life’s Redevelopment of Greek Week. According to the bill, the purpose of this legislation is to support the new direction that Greek Week is taking, which is to support greater competition and leadership opportunities instead of athletic competitions. This bill was reversed by the Programs and Institutional Development committee.

The second piece was Senate Resolution No. 2605 ASUW Support for Construction Management Degree Program. According to the bill, there may be some elective classes to teach the basics, but many students feel they are not enough and implementation of a degree program for construction management would offer more and better classes in this field.

The bill accords, “The addition of a construction management degree would benefit the state’s construction industry greatly.” This bill was referred to the Advocacy, Diversity and Policy Committee.

The third legislation introduced was Senate Bill No. 2606 Revisions to the Senate Vacancy Procedures. The bill accords, “Senate Bill 2582 did not take into account the general election and the potential it creates to have multiple elections happening simultaneously as well as simultaneous campaigning, which can confuse constituents.”

According to Senate Bill No. 2606 the change will be to close off special elections once applications for the general election opens. According to the ASUW website, applications opened Feb. 15. The bill was steered to the Student Outreach and Programming Committee.

The fourth piece of legislation introduced was Senate Bill No. 2607 Updates to the Strategic Partnership. According to the bill the current oversight for strategic partners like the Interfraternity Council and College Panhellenic Council is cumbersome and arbitrary.

According to Senate Bill No. 2607, it will seek to change the policy previously set out using feedback from strategic partners. The bill was referred to the Programs and Institutional Development Committee.

The final piece of legislation introduced was Senate Resolution No. 2608 ASUW Support for the Updated University Regulation 8-249 “ASUW Student Government.” According to the resolution, this legislation is meant to support changes that have been made by the General Counsel’s office to the University Regulation governing the ASUW student government.

According to Senate Resolution No. 2608 the ASUW President, Ben Wetzel, has been working with the general counsel’s office to help clarify the language in the university regulation and give ASUW unambiguous authority to make recommendations about student fee increases. This resolution was referred to the Advocacy, Diversity and Policy committee along with the Student Outreach and Programming committee.
