Call for designers: Kaleidoscope breaking the fashion standard

Today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. University of Wyoming Kaleidoscope is calling any student or community designer for their fashion show which is taking place on April 21.

This is the fifth year this fashion show is taking place at UW, showcasing the various categories for designs such as sustainable category, evening wear and casual. Every year Kaleidoscope has a separate featured project, which will also be presented in the fashion show.

“Last year, one of the departments at the fashion department classes partnered up with the lab school and they had to do a mini collection with a student in middle school so that was all featured in the fashion show,” Yair Sachnez, co-producer of the Kaleidoscope Fashion Show, said.  “This year we are gonna have all the categories but we are also going [to] add senior collection so we will be featuring senior collections for that.”

The event is funded by ASUW, a UW RSO Association of American Family Consumer Services (AAFCS) and various communities are providing the prizes for the first, second and third place, which will be judged by the judging panel and a people’s choice award will also be included.

“The only real criteria that we do ask is that they [have to] make a full garment,” Sachnez said. Designers can use any fabrics, color and can design any cloth but it needs to be a full garment. If the designer has designed a pant then he/she must include a shirt as well. If they want to display a dress that’s totally fine.”

The show is not only about designers but also about models as well. This event is breaking all the industry standards and criteria and inviting models of a variety of shapes, sizes and height. Students at UW and in the community can sign up for the model castings, where their measurements and photos will be taken and placed in the model book catalog.

“We put all the models that showed up to the model casting in that book,” Co-producer of Kaleidoscope Fashion Show Tristan Morrison said. “And then the designers can look at this book and they can choose and see if there is a model that fits their garment or if they want to choose a model and make it specifically for them, they can do that as well.”

Morrison said, “A lot of people are like oh I can’t be a model, I am not the model type kind of thing but there isn’t anybody specific that we are looking for and anybody can be a model. All shapes and sizes all heights.”

This year Kaleidoscope is partnering up with Laramie Foster Closet and asking people to donate their clothing to the charity. At the beginning of the show, they will have a keynote speaker representing the Laramie Foster Closet who intend on not only helping the foster children that are in society but also providing materials to benefit the foster parents. The main objective of it is to bring awareness about the various organizations in the community and expose the issues that are not really exposed in Laramie.
