Sargent leads women’s golf at Mountain West Championship

The Cowgirls wrapped up the Mountain West Championship where sophomore Erin Sargent lead the Cowgirls as she ended tied for 15th place with a score of 223 (+7).

“Erin played really well, but the rest of us did not at all,” Megan Knadler said. “Our expectations were really high and well deserved because we had a good spring, we won a tournament. But, the team as a whole struggled throughout conference.”

Senior Gabrielle Gibson was next in line for the Cowgirls, she finished 23rd as she shot a 230 (+14). Teammate Knadler shot a 233 (+17), coming in almost right behind Gibson in a tie for 27th place, her best finish of the season, said Wyoming Athletics’ Lincoln Mansch. Kaylee Knadler tied for 40th place with a score of 241 (+25) and Caitlyn Skavdahl rounded out the scoring for the Cowgirls with a score of 245 (+29), landing her in 44th place.

“I really was not satisfied with how I played,” Megan said. “My coach came up to me a few times throughout the course, and said ‘hey, we need you’ and that kind of helped me focus.”

Though Megan said she was less than happy with the way she and the team as a whole competed, coach Josey Stender tried to stay positive and found bright spots despite a performance that appeared to be below expectations.

“I was pleased with the effort and the competitive process that we had, we just really were a few puts short of the target scores we were looking for,” Coach Stender said. “But to be competitive within this conference is something that we strive for every year. We know that we are one of the top conferences in the nation.”

The UW Women’s Golf Team will be losing senior leader Gibson who has contributed tremendously to the program over the five years in which she has been involved. That being said, the team will be looking for new leaders to step up and Coach Stender has an idea of who that might be moving forward.

“[Sargent] is a very mature, hard-working, confident player,” Coach Stender said. “She really just sticks to her style of play and does it very well. She was, just like the team, just a few puts short of landing in the top-5. We will definitely be looking to her next year to be a leader.”
