Singer-songwriters to perform at Gardens

The singer-songwriter genre is a longstanding practice of writing and performing original music. In the U.S. this tradition extends from John Lennon to Bono, from blues to folk to rock.

StudioWYO, a small venue based at the university and dedicated to supporting live local music, is bringing this tradition to Laramie. The program is hosting its first singer-songwriter evening this semester 7 p.m. tonight at the Gardens. The event is free and open to the public.

Three music groups will take the stage to showcase their compositional and performance chops with new songs. Disco duo Mike Meier and Jay Egan-Wright of the Laramie group Hoi Ann will perform pieces of their self-described “sad disco” flavor of the singer-songwriter style. To get a taste of their melancholic music, see Facebook.com/HoiAnnMusic or stream their recent albums at HoiAnnMusic.bandcamp.com.

In addition to Hoi Ann, UW student Kathryn Jones will take the mic to sing a soulful blend of folk and pop, self-accompanied on guitar and keys. Jones is currently studying music and vocal performance at the graduate level.

Finally, local guitarist and singer David Schillinger will bring his story-telling style to students and others at the Gardens for this night of experimentation and original songs.
