Symphony to start year with a bang

Beginning their year this Thursday, September 20, the UW symphony with a half-classical, half-pop concert. Dubbed the It’s Magicseason, this year’s concerts are sure to be exciting not only for fans of classical music, but for all of those who enjoy a live orchestra performance.

Tomorrow’s concert will kick off with a pre-concert welcome reception in the Buchanan Center lobby at 6:45. This reception will include refreshments for all to enjoy while gathering tickets and preparing for the concert. Attendees also will have a chance to meet the Symphony Board during this time.

Acting as a trip up and down New York’s Broadway, the show will take the audience from the Theater District all the way to Lincoln Center. For the classical music lovers there will be New York City style ballet music from timeless shows such as the William Tell Overtureand non-Christmas selections from The Nutcracker.

There will also be music from Broadway shows that many people will recognize. To celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100thbirthday, there will songs from three of his shows including West Side Storythat will be sung by UW faculty members Maureen Boddicker and Katrina Zook. The massive hit show Hamiltonwill also have a suite present during the show, which many hip-hop enthusiasts will surely enjoy.

A new satirical show, The Inspector General, that premiered on Times Square last year will also make an appearance in tomorrow’s show, which will be followed by Funny Girlmusic. This last bit of music will also include saxophonists from the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble.

This show will be a magical journey through New York City music and is packed full of fan-favorite tunes. It will be a fitting start to the It’s Magic season and UW Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director Michael Griffith’s 30thseason on the podium.

The show will also offer “Tweet Seats” for attendees who wish to stay connected and share their experience on social media. These seats will be located in the back two rows of the auditorium.

The Magic of Broadwayshow will start at 7:30 tomorrow night in the Buchanan Center. The show will be a great chance to hear famous music from New York City and from a variety of genres. Season tickets are also still available for those looking to save some money and time throughout the It’s Magicseason.
