Wyoming falls short against Hawaii

The University of Wyoming Football team would lose to the University Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 13-17 on Saturday October 6 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wyoming would strike first off of a 40-yard field goal by Cooper Rothe midway through the first quarter. Hawaii would respond with a field goal of their own halfway through the second quarter. Hawaii and Wyoming would enter the half tied 3-3.  Wyoming would strike first in the second half thanks to defensive end Carl Granderson who would intercept a pass and take it 61 yards for a touchdown with a little over eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. Just before the ending the quarter Hawaii would respond with their own touchdown off of a five yard touchdown pass from Chevan Cordeiro to Cedric Byrd.

Wyoming would retake the lead with a 29-yard field goal by Rothe giving the Cowboys the 13-10 lead with 5:31 left in the game.  Hawaii would take the ball 68 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown with almost a minute and a half left in the game. Codeiro would fine JoJo Ward for a 38-yard touchdown pass. This would end up being the game winner.  Wyoming would drive deep in to Hawaii territory, but time would run out and their would fall just shy of a comeback. Cowboys would lose 13-17 and drop to 2-4 (0-2) on the season where as Hawaii would improve to 6-1 (3-0) on the season. Wyoming would be lead on offense be running back Nico Evans who had 24 carries that went for 192 yards.

Through the air Tyler Vander Waal would complete 9 out of his 16 passes for 87 yards.   Hawaii would be lead offensively by Cordeiro who completed 19 of 29 passes for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the ground Hawaii would accumulate 156 yards being lead by Dayton Furuta who had 16 carries good for 101 yards. Wyoming’s defense was able to score a touchdown in this game, their first of this year. Logan Wilson would record 11 tackles in the game, nine solo, three tackles for a loss and one sack. Wyoming would sack Hawaii four times. The defense would also force two turnovers. Hawaii would also have a good pass rush and would sack Wyoming five times.

Wyoming would not turn the ball over in the game but their lack of offensive production would be their down fall.Wyoming is once again on the road and will travel to Fresno State in Fresno, California. The game is set to kickoff at 8:30 MT and will be aired on ESPNU.
