Celebrations were held for the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. ●

ASUW hosted a bake sale and card making for deployed soldiers. ● A letter writer expressed concern about a “swarmy atmosphere” and “pattern of behavior similar to that of Bonobo chimps, studied for their uncanny bipedalism and lascivious natures” in the College of Law. Letter writers in following weeks countered the accusations. ● The Board of Trustees approved $22 million for a War Memorial Stadium renovation. ● Wyoming received a “D” rating for retaining new teachers.

30 years ago…

UW’s Provost considered getting rid of the “free day” of no classes before Homecoming week after several college deans questioned its necessity. ● In a Valentine’s Day issue, BI printed a page of dozens of “love note” classifieds. ● Famous political theorist Noam Chomsky announced plans to visit UW. ● The number of UW faculty declined 18 percent in two years. ● The theater and dance department put on a production of “Cattle Kate,” a “progressive woman trying to make a place for herself on the Wyoming frontier.”

50 years ago…

McIntyre Hall hosted an open house during which male residents were allowed to entertain female guests after 6 p.m. so long as they kept their doors one inch ajar. ● A state senator insisted if 19- and 20-year old were allowed to vote, they should have to conform to military grooming standards for personal style and hair length. Student letter writers criticized the amendment and Wyoming’s “unbending and bigoted conservatism” at length. ● Student senators at UW called for CSU’s administration to put a tighter rein on the rival college’s student newspaper after poor relations between CSU and UW students escalated.
