Employers seek criminal justice grads

Law enforcement and government agencies from around the region are scheduled to participate in the Criminal Justice Club Annual Job Fair tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom.

Similar to the University of Wyoming’s general career fair, the criminal justice fair will have opportunities for criminal justice majors and majors from other fields, including full-time employment, part-time positions and internships.

“The fair is open to all students and the participating agencies are not necessarily looking for criminal justice majors, rather, qualified individuals regardless of degree,” Criminal Justice lecturer Daniel Fetsco said.

Criminal justice is a broad area of study with a variety of possible careers. Police departments and sheriff’s offices from around Wyoming and Colorado, the United States Attorney office, UW law school, highway patrol agencies, the FBI, Secret Service, the Wyoming Department of Corrections, branches of the military and victim advocacy groups will be present during the fair.

“It is important to have a separate career fair focusing on criminal justice jobs because there are a wide variety of agencies and organizations that are involved in the criminal justice system, all of them looking for new recruits,” Fetsco said.

Criminal justice offers more employment opportunities than only working as a police officer, the best-known career associated with the field. There are private detectives, security guards, crime scene investigators, blood spatter analysts, secret agents and more.

“People assume that being a cop is the only career in the criminal justice field because police are probably the most visible professionals within the criminal justice system,” Fetsco said. “Many other professionals in the criminal justice system operate outside of the public eye, such as probation and parole agents or correctional officers.”

Fetsco expects this year to be as successful as last year’s in providing UW students with access to a wide variety of criminal justice employers.

Regardless of major, students who are interested in the criminal justice system have opportunities at the fair. Numerous employers, ranging from federal, state and local levels of law enforcement will be on hand to answer questions about their respective agencies, the work they do and any questions regarding criminal justice.
