Fans show their stripes

Wyoming fans showed Missouri that it is not necessary to be a Tiger to have stripes.

Fans were encouraged to coordinate brown and gold colored outfits depending on their seat assignment for the Aug. 31 football game against the Missouri Tigers.

Divided by section, the stadium was filled with undeniable Poke Pride during the game. With more than 26,000 fans cheering on the team, the brown and gold stripes could be seen by the planes passing above.

Lonnie Penner at the University of Wyoming Athletics Department came up with idea to stripe out the stadium.

Penner said that when he   was attending Kansas State, they had successfully done a stripe out at their stadium during one of their many games. Penner said he knew that the Wyoming-Missouri game had to be a special kick off for the team and he wanted the Cowboy fans to succeed in the stripe out for themselves.

Because this game was the season kickoff, trying the stripe out was ultimately a way to get new Cowboy fans excited with the Cowboy spirit and keep long time fans engaged in the hype, he said.

After seeing the outcome of this game, Penner said he hopes this stripe out craze will continue on in the future and grow to become more than a one time thing.
