Last Tues., Caleb Driskill of Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, Wyoming used Twitter to announce his verbal commitment to the University of Wyoming football program. The senior linebacker will be the first Wyoming verbal commit of the 2019-20 recruiting year for Wyoming in Dec. when he will sign a national letter of intent.

“During my junior year, Wyoming started to watch my film and got in contact with my coach. This past spring, they invited me to come watch during spring practice,” said Driskill.

“Throughout my senior season, they told me that they would be watching me…In my last regular season game, Coach Bohl came and watched and he liked what he saw,” he said about his recruitment process with Wyoming.

The very next day, the day of the Nevada game, Wyoming finally made an offer to Driskill. After four to five days to think things over and discuss it with his family, the senior decided to pursue his dream of playing for Wyoming.

“Just being a Wyoming kid, everyone is a fan of the Cowboys. You grow up and see those guys, you want to be one of them. As I got older, when I realized I might have an opportunity to become a Cowboy, that’s where I set my goals,” he said.

As Thunder Basin’s first Division 1 (D1) football commit, Driskill is a 6’2, 215 pound two sport athlete, playing both football and baseball for Thunder Basin. He is ranked #130 in the nation and #1 in the state of Wyoming as linebacker after coming back from a collar bone injury at the end of the 2018 season. During the offseason, the future Cowboy fought his way back to health to make a comeback for his senior year.

“After getting hurt my junior season, I just set my goals off season,” Driskill said. “I wanted to get that scholarship offer. I want to be able to play in front of hundreds of people I know from around the state who know who I am.”

Previously, he had received offers Black Hills State, Northern Colorado and a preferred walk on from Arizona State. Driskill will join Wyoming for the 2020-2021 season as a fullback, although he has primarily played linebacker for his high school career.

“I never really played fullback, but they feel in order to be a fullback, you need to be physical and be an intelligent player,” said Driskill. “They feel like that’s me, and they want me to be able to come on and make a pretty big impact. That was a team need for Coach Bohl and Wyoming.”

Either way, he is excited for the opportunity to play and make an impact for Wyoming in the upcoming years as Thunder Basin’s first D1 commit.
