Kylee Harless – Staff Writer

The Cowboys were back in action on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. The Cowboys are on a one-game winning streak and are hoping to make that a 2-game winning streak. The Cowboys beat San José State 71-66. Coach Edwards was proud of the Cowboys saying “We did a great job defending, rebounding and a tell-tale state is five guys in double-figures and 18 assists and only nine turnovers. It was a great team day.” in an interview with Wyo Sports. The Cowboys had a good outing in the game with 5 Cowboys having double-figures. AS for the game with Boise State, the Cowboys are hoping to have a repeat and get their second win in the Mountain West.

Wyoming started the game off strong, within a minute of tip-off Kwane Marble made a 3 to put the Cowboys up. After some running up and down the court, Boise State was able to take the lead after Wyoming had missed two 3 pointers in a row and left a bronco open on their 3-point line. With 16 minutes left in the first half, the Broncos had the lead at 8 to 7. Wyoming was on fire, taking good shots and make those shots. They forced Boise State to take a time out with 13:06 left in the first half and Wyoming was up 13 to 8 at the time of the time out. For most of the first half, it was back and forth. The score was tied most of the time, if not one team up by one point.

Wyoming played well in the first half. They kept the Broncos from running away with the lead and got their shots to go down. Even though they played well they also made many mistakes. They threw the ball away a couple of times and were playing for themselves and not as a team at some points in the half. But as their stats show they had a good first half. The Cowboys shot 48% from the field and 36% from behind the arc. Boise shot 44% from the field and 46% from behind the arc. Overall both teams did well in the first half and that would explain why the score at half time was 33 to 33. Will the Cowboys fin in the end? Let’s find out.

“This is a special group and they are still young, there is still that youthfulness that time will help. They are having fun and I think sometimes in sports you can get caught up in the separation of fun and work.  I enjoy coaching them because you can see the steady growth in them.” Said Coach Edwards.

The start to the second half stopped and go. Nearly the first 2 minutes of the half the play was stopped due to a Cowboy foul. Where they all truly foul not really but it happened, and it got the Cowboys fired up. The Cowboys went on a shooting spree and got the lead up to 42-39. The Cowboys got quite physical after, thy ewer down on defense and stealing the ball. It was a real team effort. Not only were doing work on defense but also on offense they were making good plays and getting good shots. For most of the second half, the Cowboys lead the Broncos. After the ten-minute mark of the second half, the game calmed down. Both teams settled into the game and good back and forth. The Cowboys were still making shots and growing their lead.

Unfortunately, this is not how the game would end. The Cowboys will have too many mistakes and missed shots to win the game. The Cowboys also gave up to many opportunities on defense to stop the Broncos. The Cowboys ended the game with 44% from the field and 26% from behind the arch. Boise State ended with 42% from the field and 36% from behind the arch. The final score of the game was Wyoming 62 and Boise State 67.

“I think it comes does to timely mistakes and we didn’t make free throws that we should have. It comes back to turnover and free throws and the timely stops that we needed.” Said TJ Taylor

The Cowboys are back in action on Saturday, February 8, 2020, to play the New Mexico Lobos in New Mexico.
