Small Town Coach turns into Pokes Coach

Living in the Agricultural world Curtis Doubet has never had a dull day in his life. In talking with Curtis, you know from the beginning you are going to learn a lot and become friends or even build a working relationship that is sure to last.

Curtis grew up in Parker Colorado, where he was in 4-H and began Livestock Judging at a young age. After high school, Curtis went to CSU, where he judged and was the High Individual at the American Royal. After his time in College, Doubet became the livestock judging coach at Colorado State University and then moved to Sterling Colorado, where he is the current coach at Northeastern Junior College.

“I actually coached at Colorado State 3 years prior to NJC; I look forward to going to UW so that I can become the best version of myself.” Said Mr. Doubet. “When I got done being a coach at CSU, I started my own Judging company called the “The Judging Experience.”

Curtis uses the, The Judging Experience to not only teach students how to be fantastic judgers but also teach students public speaking skills and giving those kids the skills to succeed in life. He hopes that being able to be a better coach at UW because he has been a coach at all levels. With him coaching at the junior level, senior level, and coaching to the middle/high school levels, he hopes to take that knowledge and pay it forward to UW.
“I have the ability to recognize that those kids have been places. They have been through the gantlet before they got to UW, and that can give me the background to interact with the students and build a relationship with the students.” Said Doubet.

I asked Curtis the question that came with lots of laughs, how are people taking it that you coached at CSU and now you are the coach at UW?
“I’m not worried about it; I never had a distaste for UW, and I am excited to be the coach, but the jokes have come in,” said Doubet. “If you asked me when I was going to CSU if I was going to be coaching at Wyoming, I probably would have called you crazy.”

Doubet is nothing but excited for the future. During our time that we got to chat. He has so many plans in place to continue the work that was they are before him. Caleb and Curtis have made plans for both teams that the transition is as smooth as possible. Both Caleb and Curtis have both planned to stay with their current team through the National Competition that will happen in November.

“Caleb will finish his what will be is seniors, and I will continue to coach my incoming sophomore. So, we won’t miss a beat with our teams, and that will make things smooth.” Said Doubet.

Curtis has been busy recruiting; he said that he has members of his current team at NJC that will be hopefully coming to Wyoming to go to College but also to continue to judge under him. He has other students from College in Wyoming and Kansas that are hopefully going to come judge under him, and he is excited for the students because he believes that they are going to make an excellent team and a team that could win the National Competition.

Curtis will take over the team in December, and he looks forward to his new life at Wyoming. He is excited to meet the students and people that UW home.

“The support I have seen is nothing I have seen before. It’s neat to see the support I have received, and it nice to see.” Said Doubet. “This is going to be a cool opportunity, the facility and staff is amazing, and I am pumped and excited to start working at UW.”
