5K for suicide awareness this Saturday; opportunity for community to “come together”

On Saturday, Sept. 19 Bond’s Brewing Company will be hosting a 5K walk/run for suicide awareness. A Walk to Remember will honor those that have been lost to suicide, while raising awareness for suicide prevention.

“According to the latest data from the American Association of Suicidology, Wyoming had the second-highest suicide rate in the United States in 2018,” said Dr. Tess M. Kilwein, a clinical psychologist and trauma specialist at UW.

Registration for the 5K will be from 9 – 10 AM at Bond’s Brewing Company on Saturday. The walk/run is expected to take place between 10 – 11:30 AM and participants are encouraged to set their own pace, according to the event’s page on Facebook.

“This is an opportunity for the community to come together in a visible way and say: We don’t want to lose another Wyomingite to suicide,” Kilwein said. “We don’t want our loved ones to suffer in silence anymore.”

According to the events Facebook page, all proceeds will go to Grace for 2 Brothers Foundation. The Wyoming organization aims to prevent suicide through awareness, education and support.

After the walk, participants are encouraged to socialize and get food provided by Devine Eats.
