UWPD investigating Union break-in

An individual broke into the Wyoming Union over the weekend and was recently apprehended by UWPD.

The break-in occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26. At this time, two locations in the Union have reported a break-in; The UW Bookstore, and the Student Media office.

“A staff member reported criminal entry, and it is currently under investigation,” J. Core, the lead UWPD officer on the case, said.

“All we know of now is what he looks like. The rest is being kept under lock and key,” Bella Spicer, a bookstore employee said

Union staff was made aware of the incident on March 28.

“I got an email from my boss this morning about it, and all she told me was that someone broke in and then showed me this picture to see if I recognized him,” Erin Barnhart, a Union desk employee said.

The Union closes at midnight every Monday through Friday and doesn’t reopen until 7:00 a.m.

Union entrances are on an automatic timer and lock automatically at midnight when the Union closes.

The only people allowed in the Union at these times are staff members, whose WyoOne ID lets them in.

UWPD had no leads until roughly 3:30 p.m. on March 28.

Because the break-in occurred during closed hours, authorities are also trying to figure out how he got in without setting off an alarm.

The individual involved was apprehended by UWPD on March 28. He is being charged with breaking and entering. Any further charges are unknown at this time.

When asked why he broke into the building but didn’t take anything, the suspect simply said he was “exploring.”
