Students oppose removal of parking for new green space

With the Ivinson Parking Garage’s construction underway, the university is electing to turn two current parking lots into green spaces for students.

The current plan is to replace the Greek Row and Wyoming Union parking areas with green space and build the parking garage behind the classroom building on Ivinson and Eighth.

“The parking garage is a great idea for students that live off-campus but what about the kids that live on campus like the freshman and all of greek life? they deserve to keep the parking that they have.” Senior Maddie Decker said.

While the parking garage will help students and staff avoid scraping off snow and ice in the winter, and offer them more places to park, they did not anticipate the removal of two major lots on campus.

The Greek Row parking circle is the largest “R” permit parking area that borders the main campus. Down the road, two parking lots can be found near the Corbbet building.

The Wyoming Union parking lot is the largest “A” permit parking lot on campus.

“When I was a freshman there was parking behind Mac, but they took that away, and now this,”  Junior Sheamis Hawley said. “I don’t think they are thinking practically about how cold it gets in the winter and how many students live on campus and rely on student parking.”

It is half a mile from the John Corbett Building to White Hall. The pathway can become very icy in the winter months, and it has motion-activated lighting, causing issues for those walking to and from campus at night.

“I walk home from Corbett every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. when my lab gets out, and I am on high alert,” Senior Mackenzie Corbett said.

“It is hard to see because the lights don’t turn on until I am underneath them. It’s freezing. And I am constantly turning my head back and forth to see if someone is walking near me. If they take away the Greek Row parking and just leave Corbett, girls all across this campus will never feel safe walking home alone at night.”
