How to navigate the first year of college.

Coming to college can be overwhelming. Many students don’t even know what their lives will be like once they head to campus.

First year students are expected to take new classes, meet new people, and learn how to live independently. It can be overwhelming sometimes and lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and feeling hopeless.

It doesn’t have to be this way, though. With some help, the first year of college can be an exciting new chapter in someone’s life.

Forbes gives the following advice to incoming first-year college students:

  1. Always go to class
  2. Be proactive about your college education
  3. Focus on networking
  4. Take care of your mental health
  5. Be mindful of money

First-year students have access to many resources on the University of Wyoming campus to help them achieve these goals.

They have classes filled with classmates to help hold them accountable for things such as studying and attendance.

The University of Wyoming also offers the University Counseling Center as a resource for students across campus to help students cope with stress, academics, eating patterns, identity concerns, and other internal challenges that college students might face.

First-year students also have access to the dining halls, which operate from 7:00 am- 7:00 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am – 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm- 7:00 pm on weekends.

Some other tips that US News recommends are:
1) Come to the first day of classes prepared.
2) Do research before deciding on a major and minor.
4) Embrace time-management tools such as a planner.
5) Know how to stay safe on campus.
6) Research ways to get involved on campus.
7) Know where to go on campus for academic help.

The University of Wyoming has many options for first-year students to get involved. They offer a Sattle Up Program on August 14-19, Cowboy Carnival on August 20, and many other things such as Union After Dark, free movie nights, and sporting events.

The university also offers academic tools such as the writing center, which helps with types of academic writing.

The Univerity also offers Step tutoring. They provide free tutoring in most of the 1000 and 2000-level courses.

Overall, the first year of college will be an adjustment, but it doesn’t have to be as stressful and scary as people make it sound.
