Journalist Jim Angell passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at the age of 64. He was the former Wyoming Press Association Executive Director and Associated Press Wyoming, Correspondent. The following are quotes from industry friends of Angell.
“Jim was a tremendous journalist, friend, and mentor to a lot of journalists and people in the industry,” Matt Edelman, publisher of the Douglas Budget, said. “He was just a great guy to be around, a fun guy. In the journalism world, he played a huge role in keeping journalism standards. He really pressed officials to be accountable. He worked tirelessly to uphold journalistic standards. His impact was clear across the entire state. He loved music and having a great time and laughed a lot. He is going to be greatly missed.”
“Jim was a staunch supporter of the student press in the state of Wyoming,” Cary Berry-Smith, Supervisor of Student Media, said. “I could always count on Jim to come over to offer training or guidance. Whenever we had first amendment challenges on campus, Jim was there to offer support and advice on what to do next. He was an incredibly talented writer and I value his camaraderie and support as a colleague. I learned a lot from him as a young journalist. Jim was never afraid to tell you what he thought. He was upfront and honest. He was there when we needed him the most.”
“He was one of the few members of the Wyoming Press Association to receive the Milton Chilcott Award for outstanding efforts in defending public information. He was a great activist for open news and open media.” Jim Wood, former Wyoming Press Association President, said.
