UW loses to Boise State after close upset

UW Cowboys had the last home game of the season on Saturday, losing to Boise State 20-17.

The two teams took turns taking over the lead in the game that defined the Mountain West division winner. The Wyoming Cowboys played their hearts out in an exciting game against the number one team in the Mountain West Conference. 

Jayden Clemons had his first college start against the Boise State Broncos while Andrew Peasley, the starting quarterback, is still out with an injury. 

Cornerback Deron Harrell picked up a fumble after a Boise State receiver dropped it in the first quarter. Soon after that, running back (RB) Titus Swen rushed and got Wyoming into the endzone before Boise State, turning the score 7-0 after the addition of the field goal. 

First quarter ended a few minutes after that failed field goal with the score 7-0, Wyoming in the lead.

In the second second quarter, Hoyland made a field goal, adding three points to Wyoming’s scoreboard. Before the end of the second quarter, Boise State made two field goals causing the score to be 6-10 going into halftime. 

Wyoming started off with the ball at the start of the third quarter. A Boise State player intercepted the ball that had been intended for wide receiver Alex Brown. This put Boise State into the offensive position. After a few plays, they scored seven points, taking the lead away from the Cowboys. 

Under a minute before the third quarter ended, Cowboys made seven points with an 83 yard touchdown by Swen and a field goal by Hoyland. The scoreboard reads 13-17 at the end of the third quarter. 

Boise gained another touchdown and field goal after a tough fourth quarter start. With eight minutes left in the game, Wyoming needed to get another touchdown in order to win the game or a field goal to tie it.

With under two minutes remaining, Clemon’s pass was intercepted by Boise State which helped Boise State get the ball back. A few plays later, the Cowboys grabbed a fumble and ran it to field goal range. Soon after, Clemons threw the ball in the endzone, but a Boise State player caught it from Joshua Cobbs who was double guarded by Boise State. After trading the ball three times in the last two minutes of the game, Boise State clinched the game title 20-17.

The Wyoming Cowboys have a season record of 7- 4 as they get ready to play Fresno State on November 25.
