A formal statement from Student Media

Student Media supports all members of the university community. Student Media strives to foster an open, welcoming and diverse environment where differing perspectives can be explored safely. We are saddened that a member of our staff and community was singled out. We are shocked that this was not an isolated incident for members of the LGBTQIA+ community last week.

While the First Amendment is the foundation of our work and way of life, free speech comes with great responsibility. Free speech and a free press are fundamental to the marketplace of ideas that is paramount to this country. However, speech that leads to violence or harm to an individual or a group of individuals is reprehensible and must be held to account. We are discouraged by the blatant disregard for humanity that was expressed last week to members of the university community. Respectful discourse is always the preferred method of exploring competing views, especially in an academic setting.
