Cowgirls sweep the floor with Nevada

The Wyoming Cowgirls picked up a big win last Thursday, beating the Nevada Wolves with a final score of 81-66. 

The victory marked the Cowgirls’ second to last game of the season and the game that marked Allyson Fertig’s 500th rebound shot. 

The game started off slow with Nevada in the lead 8-5 in the first five minutes. Before the first time out, Quinn Weidemann made a three point jump shot with assistance from Malene Pederson, tying the score 8-8. Nevada led with 10-8 at the first quarter timeout.  

After the time out, Nevada scored two points making the score 12-8. After three free throws shots from Pederson and a layup & free throw from Weidemann, the Cowgirls started their continuous lead 14-12.

At the end of the first quarter, the Cowgirls were in the lead 19-17. 

Two minutes into the second quarter, Fertig made a layup assisted by Grace Ellis, making the score 21-18 Cowgirls leading. 

Between players Malane Pederson, Quinn Weidemann, Marta Savic, Emily Mellama and Allyson Fertig; the Cowgirls scored a total of 24 points in the second quarter, putting the Cowgirls in the lead 43-24 at halftime. 

“I have to give all the credit to my staff. They had this team so ready, and I didn’t have to worry about things while I was away, because I knew they had this thing under control,” Head Coach Heather Ezell said.

“Our kids started a little slow but that second quarter was what we like to see and we really got it going. It was nice to stretch that lead.”

Coming back in the third quarter, Cowgirl Tommi Olsen scored a three point shot with help from Ellis, making the score 46-24.

Wyoming and Nevada kept exchanging shots back-and-forth, leaving the score 56-34 Cowgirls with the lead at the media timeout with 4:46 left in the third quarter. 

After the media timeout, Nevada made two free throw shots, making the score 56-36 Wyoming. Right after Nevada scored, Pederson shot a layup with assistance from Fertig, bringing the score to 58-36 Wyoming.

The next two minutes of the game were slow in scoring. Wyoming and Nevada each only made  two points, bringing the score to 60-38 Cowgirls. After a stretch of layups and three point shots, the third quarter ended with Wyoming in the lead 68-44. 

The fourth quarter opened up with a jump shot from Nevada and a layup from Cowgirl Marta Savic assisted by Weidemann, making the score 70-46. 

For the next two minutes of the game no points were scored until Nevada made a layup, followed by a jump shot made by Fertig. This kicked off the slow back-and-forth of points between the two teams the rest of the fourth quarter. 

With 1:29 left in the game, Pederson made a layup with assistance from Tess Barnes, bringing the score to 81-64. After the Cowgirls scored, Nevada made two free throw shots making the final score of the game 81-66 Cowgirls. 

“We played a good game, it was nice to see a win in one of our last games. I’m excited to see what happens with CSU Saturday and to play our best,” Cowgirl Malene Pederson said. 

“It was nice to have coach back. She surprised us one day and it is nice to have her back and show her all the work we have accomplished.”
