100 students receive Trustees’ Scholars Award

The Trustees’ Scholar Award is the premier resident scholarship awarded to a cohort of Wyoming high school seniors on the basis of high academic merit. This year, there are 100 students from 34 different high schools within the state of Wyoming.

“The selection process remains highly competitive, with this year’s scholarship recipients averaging a 3.97 unweighted high school cumulative GPA and 32 ACT composite,” Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid Anna Elizabeth Terfehr said.

“We look forward to welcoming another new cohort of Trustees’ Scholars Award recipients this fall.”

The scholarship provides a four-year scholarship for an undergraduate degree (or up to eight consecutive semesters), including tuition of up to 18 hours per semester.

As well as mandatory fees, university standard double room and board. Room and board are covered, providing the student lives in university housing and has a meal plan.

Recipients must maintain a 3.25 UW cumulative GPA and continuous enrollment of 12 hours each fall and spring, with successful completion of 24 credit hours each academic year.

Megan Bingham is a senior from Laramie High School who is a recipient of this award. She plans to major in Dental Hygiene.

“For me, receiving this scholarship means that all the years of work I’ve put into school and my education feels validated. It means that my efforts to develop myself as both an intellectual and an individual have paid off,” Bingham said.

“One of the questions asked during the selection process is what it means to you to be a Trustees Scholar, and for me, it means that I have worked hard to become a dedicated student who wants to use my knowledge to help improve the world.”

To prepare for the ACT, Bingham used a Brigham Young University ACT prep program that went over strategies and tips to use on the test.

“During the test, I just tried to stay calm and remind myself that I’d done the hard work of taking all my classes and learning everything I needed to up until that point,” Bingham said.

“I am most looking forward to living on my own and learning more about who I am as an independent person. I want to make my own life and be able to make my own path.”

A fellow recipient of this award is senior Nickoli Kumm from Cody High School. Kumm plans to major in Music Performance with a focus on the Alto Saxophone.

“It’s awesome! The Trustees award means a lot because I can worry less about paying for college,” Kumm said.

“I really didn’t struggle much to keep my grades up. I was surprised I qualified because I got a 31 on the ACT, which was pretty difficult.”

Wyoming high school seniors who apply by December 1 are considered for the scholarship.

“A scholarship committee will review those who met the December 1 deadline and invite students on the basis of academic merit to the second round of the selection process,” Director of Admission Shelley Dodd said.

The scholarship committee will review student submissions in the second round of the selection process and invite students to the final round of the selection process. The final round consists of an online and an in-person interview.

The Trustees’ Scholars Award is a scholarship that brings multiple opportunities to future Wyoming Cowboys. The scholarship committee continues to be impressed with the caliber of Wyoming high school seniors from across the state.
