Students leave good impression at Job Fair

The Big Job Fair opened Career Fair Week on
Tuesday, Sept. 19th, giving companies from all over Wyoming and abroad an opportunity to set up to recruit University of Wyoming students. There were four fairs within a span of three days, from Tuesday through.

To no surprise, there was an abundance of government representation, along with agricultural and natural resource companies attending. Of the 54 total companies that totaled the Big Job Fair on Tuesday, were companies like Bureau of Land Management, Wyoming Game and Fish Dept., Electrical Distributors Inc., and Farmers Coop Elevator Co.

Employers were generally impressed with the preparedness of the attendees, as comments were made on the students’ assertion.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Elizabeth Dean, Education Program Manager representing Oregon Tilth, said.

“I would say that everyone seemed very well engaged and well informed and knew what they wanted to get out of the career fair, which was really helpful as
well.”

Dean also gave a nod to Career Prep Week, saying that she was impressed with things like prepared resumes, and even professional attire.

“You know, I just have to point out, I saw a lot of students and a lot of well dressed people. So they definitely came to impress, which I think was probably part of that prep week, I’m sure.”

Companies plead open positions of all varieties at the Big Job Fair, while employers attending the Pharmacy and Sciences Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) job fairs obviously geared more toward students in the STEM majors.

In the past, STEM majors are usually represented well and highly sought out at the UW career fairs; which was certainly the case for this year’s Career Fair week, as well.

“In terms of numbers,” Chrissy Renfro, Associate Director of Career Advising Services began, “STEM [students] probably have the most and I think that’s because we have a lot of students in those types of majors.”
