Coach Sawvel sets new OC and DC

After the Cowboys’ 2023 Arizona Bowl victory, Jay Sawvel was officially the new head coach. In the weeks since, he has got straight to work building his new team, starting with the coordinators.

With Sawvel rising from the position of defensive coordinator, he was tasked with finding his replacement. He didn’t have to look far, quickly settling on linebackers coach Aaron Bohl. Aaron, son of Coach Craig Bohl, has spent his whole coaching career with Wyoming, starting as a graduate assistant in 2017. In 2019, he became interim linebackers coach and then spent 2020-2023 as the full time linebackers coach.

“Aaron Bohl is an outstanding football coach and that has shown in the development and the play of our linebackers over the past few years,” Coach Sawvel said.

During his time as linebackers coach, several legendary Cowboys have come through the program including current Bengals standout Logan Wilson and Chad Muma of the Jaguars. Additionally he oversaw the college career of Easton Gibbs, who declared for the NFL draft at the end of this season.

“His knowledge of the defense is outstanding along with the knowledge of the concepts we have in place. He has grown as a coach in his time at Wyoming and I’m excited for him to have this opportunity with our program,” Sawvel continued.

It wasn’t long until the offensive coordinator position was filled too. Once again, Coach Sawvel found a candidate he already had a connection to, hiring Jay Johnson, the former OC for the Michigan State Spartans. Johnson and Sawvel coached together at Minnesota in 2016, and so Sawvel is already familiar with his track record.

“Jay Johnson has proven himself to be a very good offensive coordinator at many different stops in his career,” Coach Sawvel said. Bringing over 28 years of coaching experience, Johnson accumulated an impressive resume. More recently, he coached NFL stars Jayden Reed and Kenneth Walker in his time at Michigan State, along with working under Kirby Smart at Georgia.

While the 2024 season is far off, Sawvel has already put together his coaching staff and can already get to work making his players better.
