Fertig’s strong performance leads Cowgirls to win over Fresno State

Allyson Fertig put up another 20+ point performance to help lift the Cowgirls over Fresno State 62-51. The Cowgirls are now 16-12 and keep their position at 4th in the conference seeding ahead of the tournament in a couple weeks.

The Cowgirls continued their excellent shooting at San Jose into their matchup with Fresno State on Saturday. The Cowgirls and Bulldogs went back and forth in the first quarter, trading three pointers and layups, with Wyoming carrying a narrow 16-14 lead as the quarter wrapped up.

As the second quarter progressed, the Cowgirls began to build a small lead using great passing and solid shooting. Thanks to great finishing at the hoop by Allyson Fertig, Wyoming grabbed a five point lead in the quarter. At the half, Fertig led the way with 13 points and 7 rebounds, and the Cowgirls were up 36-31.

Unfortunately for Wyoming in the third, turnover problems began to appear, helping Fresno State cut into the small lead. With 3:37 left in the quarter, the Bulldogs had shot their way to only a two point deficit at 42-40. Just as it seemed the game was headed to a close fourth quarter, the Cowgirls offense was reignited however. Allyson Fertig and Tess Barnes went on a 6-0 run for Wyoming to keep the game 48-43 at the end of the third.

In the fourth, Fertig grabbed her tenth rebound to put up her 28th career double-double and continue the strong offensive performance for Wyoming. A true team effort helped that lead build and buckets by Fertig, Mellema, Barnes, and McKenna put the Cowgirls up 58-48 with four minutes to go. Each team added a few more scores as the time ticked away, but the Cowgirls cruised to a 62-51 win.

Fertig was 7/11, putting up 24 points and 10 rebounds, making it her 4th 20+ point game this season. The Cowgirls gave up 16 turnovers but out-rebounded Fresno State 37-28 to help cover mistakes.

With that win, Wyoming will keep their momentum as they head towards the conference tournament. First, they have one more stop at San Diego State this Tuesday, tipping off at 7 PM.
