Your Ultimate Guide to Outdoor Adventures in Laramie This Summer

Despite the weather we’ve been getting lately, summertime is nearly upon us, and with summer comes a plethora of outdoor activities to do in the area. Here’s a roundup of some of the best outdoor activities to enjoy in Laramie this summer!

One of the most well-known destinations around Laramie is the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, located just to our west. This enormous national forest spans over 400,000 acres and has places for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and even horseback riding! In addition to this, if you aren’t looking to get out of the car much, just driving the Snowy Range Scenic Byway and passing by the glacial lakes near the top can be a breathtaking experience. Popular trails in the area include the Medicine Bow Peak Hike, which will take you up to 12,013 feet and provides ample challenge for more experienced hikers, or the Turtle Rock Loop trail, located out east in Vedauwoo (which is still part of the forest!) if you’re looking for something a little easier.

Slightly closer to home is Curt Gowdy State Park, which is only 30 minutes from Laramie. The park features reservoirs that offer fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, making it an ideal spot for those seeking water-based activities. Equipment rentals for the area are available through the University’s Outdoor Program, meaning that everyone can have fun regardless of equipment requirements. In addition to the aquatic fun, the park also has its own set of trails that you can hike, as well as some camping grounds if you’re hoping to stay a little bit longer.

For more adventure, explore the Laramie River Greenbelt, a scenic trail system along the river, ideal for walking, running, or cycling while enjoying views of cottonwood trees and wetlands. Anglers can cast for trout in the Laramie River, known for its healthy fish populations. Another gem is the Pilot Hill Recreation Area, offering over 8,000 acres of trails for hiking, biking, and trail running, with connections to the Happy Jack Recreation Area for extended exploration.

New to the list and my personal favorite, stargazing in Laramie’s clear, high-altitude skies is a must. Head to the University of Wyoming’s Knight Observatory for public viewing nights or find a quiet spot in the Medicine Bow National Forest or out on your friends’ country property for unobstructed views of the Milky Way, other galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters! For more information about how to get into this, make sure to contact the University of Wyoming’s astronomy club, which will be hosting several star parties throughout the summer to examine the incredible summer sky.

Summer’s almost here in Laramie and the outdoors beckon! Hike the wild trails of Medicine Bow National Forest, paddle in Curt Gowdy’s lakes, stroll the Laramie River Greenbelt, or explore Pilot Hill’s vast paths. Fish for trout or gaze at stars under clear Wyoming skies. This town has it all: simple trails, quiet waters, and bright nights. Pack light, bring friends, and make this summer one to remember.
