Trump and Musk Feud: Genuine or Media Stunt?

In the midst of political turmoil, potential wars on the horizon in the Middle East, and an unprecedented time of difficulty for the American economy, a new drama has unfolded. Rather than focus on the large issues facing the American people and larger global stage in recent weeks, many have been discussing the falling out between Trump and Musk.

Elon Musk has been argued to be not only one of the most influential men in America, but also one of the primary reasons behind Trump’s successful election. Musk began as an outward critic of Trump in 2020 before morphing into one of his largest supporters, donating tens of millions of dollars to his campaign and ultimately earning a place in the newly created Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE). This was seen as controversial from all sides and ultimately Musk was not kept in his position, a decision that led to the downfall of their relationship.

With his proposal for a $4 trillion spending bill, “The One Big Beautiful Bill,” Trump infuriated Musk, who called it an abomination. This led to a response from Trump who stated, “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot,” and added, “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave.” This further cemented reports that Musk had overstayed his welcome at the White House and was no longer considered a reasonable political asset. This immediately led to backlash from Musk who began slandering Trump in tweets, going as far as to say, “Time to drop the really big bomb: Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” This accusation held large ramifications for both men’s reputations and garnered political attacks from Trump in the form of a threat against Musk’s contracts, “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”

The entire situation sparked theorizing and controversy amongst many supporters on both sides of the argument. With many Trump supporters being conservative and thus frequently anti-electric vehicle due to a pro-fossil fuel stance, this gave way for those who had previously supported Musk to turn on him with permission from President Trump. In the opposite direction, many in the business world who idolized Musk and supported Trump due to Musk’s support turned on Trump, using this opportunity to call him radical and unreasonable.

Trump and Musk eventually made up just under a week after the events began. The tweets by Musk were mostly removed as he, “expressed regret over some of his posts, admitting they may have gone too far.” Trump appreciated this, calling it, “very nice” in an interview with the New York Post. This fueled the idea that many originally had, that the entire thing was manufactured to put attention on both men and create fake drama. With Trump’s approval ratings going back to where they steadily stood, and Tesla already recovering from a 14% stock loss, moving back on their upward trends of almost 80% value since the year began, the feud between the two men has had few lasting negative effects.
