Brook Mine Opens in Wyoming, First Rare Earth Mineral Mine in 70 Years

The first coal mine to open in Wyoming in almost 50 years and the first rare Earth minerals mine in the nation to open in 70 years, the Brook Mine marks an integral opening. This mine is estimated to be a massive profit gain and resource collection operation for Wyoming. The US Secretary of Energy will visit for this landmark event as the Wyoming natural resource economy expands in this groundbreaking development.

The ribbon cutting included Governor Gordon alongside Senators Barasso and alumnus and Representative Hageman. With 1.7 million tons of rare earth minerals scouted in the area, this discovery will create revolutionary growth for not just Wyoming but the Mountain West’s regional industry.

This mine’s opening comes amidst the Trump administration’s push for a stronger emphasis on extractive energy production. With a focus on greater drilling for fossil fuels, the mission aims to oppose previous administrations’ focus on alternatives to hydrocarbon production. The elements found in addition to the basic coal used for fuel potential are scandium, gallium, and germanium, which are essential to a multitude of electronics production projects. With Salt Lake City and locations in Montana being neighboring earth mineral spots, Wyoming’s mine will be more than competitive.

As this mine will be the only one of its particular kind in the US, with germanium and gallium being minerals America depends on China for, this could be pivotal in reducing foreign dependence for extractive energy production. Domestic resource collection is a commonly praised concept within Wyoming and this mine will ideally continue within Wyoming’s goals. With Sheridan being as small as it is, the mine could be a significant new employer in the area and in Wyoming.

With the under and over deposits in coal mines helping to offset costs in what could become a nationally significant domestic supply line, there will be the ability to process, extract, and distribute these materials without any external influence. Wyoming is especially excited about this development due to a focus of local and state politicians on self-sufficiency and a reluctance to interact with foreign actors for any resource needs.

Wyoming is seeing a shift in many other states sharing the longstanding belief that independence in resource production is essential to maintaining US credibility as a high-stakes actor on the global stage. With a 70-year dependence on foreign resources, primarily from China, this has detracted from the ability of America to be independent in the technology and energy industry. With the rare resources mine opening in such a remote location, the industry is sure to boost the economy in that region to a degree that a new hub of development similar to the boom around Gillette will form. With this type of traction in the economy and Wyoming industry specifically, Wyoming is identifying itself as a relevant actor in national processing and extraction beyond just coal, as the US gains more strength in the eyes of countries like China upon whom America will no longer rely to such a high degree in these areas.

Overall, this mine opening will be a big step for the Wyoming economy and the United States as a whole. The resources gained will create new jobs and opportunities for domestic supply lines and give Wyoming and the US more credibility and ability in the economy. Following a trend of independence and a desire for self-sustainability, this mine marks a new era in energy for the US.
