Cowgirl Soccer Boasts Strong Showings to Begin Season

The Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team is already well under way into their 2025 season and have so far tallied a pair of home wins and a tie on the road. The start has served as a much better debut than a year ago for now second-year head coach Josh Purdum, as the Cowgirls had opened their initial opening three-game stretch of the 2024 season with a tie and two losses.

The Cowgirls began the 2025 season in Des Moines, Iowa, where they were able to draw even against the Drake Bulldogs out of the Missouri Valley Conference. Both teams were only capable of finding the back of the net once, with both teams’ goals coming in the second frame of the contest.

“It ended up being a really intense game,” head coach Josh Purdum said of the Cowgirls’ draw against Drake in a press release. “We wanted to make sure they didn’t find their best players throughout the game, and by denying them their strength, we were able to find some offense for ourselves.”

The contest was a scrappy one, as the Cowgirls were only able to take two of their nine shots on the goal and their only goal came late in the second half at the 72:35 mark of the contest.

However, it hasn’t been the Cowgirls’ offense that has shined the most through their first three games of the season–that would be the defense, which has led the way towards two straight home shutout wins over Northern Colorado and Regis. As a whole, the Cowgirls’ defense has only allowed a single goal through their opening three contests.

Still, Purdum is looking for more production out of his attacking unit, as the Cowgirls’ competition will only continue to ramp up as a pair of Power Four programs–the Colorado Buffaloes and Georgia Bulldogs–await the Cowgirls in their next two outings. Both of those contests will be played in hostile environments on the road, as the Cowgirls will finish what will be a three game road swing at Idaho State after taking on the Buffaloes and the Bulldogs.

“You can look at the stats and see that we need more quality in front of goal. And that’s unfortunately three games we’ve said that in a row. We’ll continue to grow into that,” Purdum also said in a press release after the Cowgirls’ win over Regis.

While it’s hard to grasp the overall outlook on the Cowgirls’ entire season in just the opening three games, they have seemingly passed the eye-test thus far–and will undoubtedly be tested in a big way through the remainder of their non-conference schedule and into the ever-competitive gauntlet of Mountain West play.
