The Wyoming Cowgirls struck early after a lengthy delay due to weather and did not look back, besting the 15th ranked Bulldogs on their home field.
Following a tough road loss last weekend at the hands of Colorado, the Cowgirls were away from Laramie again, making the long trip to Athens, Georgia for a high powered clash with the Bulldogs, ranked 15th in the country.
With the match originally slated for a 6:30 PM start, inclement weather pushed kickoff all the way until 10 PM Eastern time. That didn’t phase the Cowgirls however, and just 10 minutes in, top goal scorer Alyssa Glover found the back of the net to put Wyoming on the board and take an early lead.
From that point, it became a defensive masterclass by the Cowgirls and goalkeeper Haley Bartel. With the score needed to win the game taken care of, the defense rose to the occasion, locking up the Bulldogs and securing their third shutout of the season.
“The types of saves she [Bartel] had to come up with to keep a clean sheet and to keep us in the game were impressive,” head coach Josh Purdum said about his defensive anchor. “Her composure and her heart shined through every time.”
This becomes just the 2nd win over a ranked opponent ever for the Cowgirls after last year’s 2-0 home victory against 11th ranked Utah State. Both wins came with Purdum at the helm of Cowgirl Soccer.
The Cowgirls are now 3-1-1 and off to a hot start to begin their 2025 campaign. They’ll head to Pocatello, ID next week on Sept. 11 to play Idaho State and wrap up their road trip, then finally return to Laramie on the 14th for a matchup with Colorado Mesa.
