It wasn’t the best shooting night for the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team to pick up their second consecutive road upset in Mountain West play.
Head coach Sundance Wicks earned arguably his best win in his two-year tenure with the Cowboys, defeating Grand Canyon on the road for the team’s first Quad 1 NET victory and just their second road win of the season. the only other road victory coming against winless Air Force. The Cowboys looked to carry that momentum into a matchup with Boise State, which defeated Wyoming 81-65 earlier this season.
Wicks’ undermanned squad had an optimal start to the contest asserting themselves with an early six-point advantage behind a Naz Meyer triple, as their offensive play was efficient in the opening minutes of the contest.

The Cowboys would eventually push that lead a point higher, taking a seven-point advantage at 30-23 with a little over two minutes left in the first half. They seemed poised to sharpen that edge heading into the locker room, which would leave them in prime position to come up with yet another big victory on the road.
The Broncos quickly halted that idea, as the Broncos would heave in a bank-shot three at the horn to cap off the first half on a 9-0 run to flip the advantage in their favor at 32-30.
The Cowboys were never again able to snag the lead over the Broncos in this one, despite leading for a large majority of the opening frame.
“I thought we had a great energy and effort tonight, [but] I thought our execution defensively lacked a bit,” Wicks said in a postgame interview with the Cowboys Sports Network.
The second half was a battle, with the Cowboys never trailing by more than 10 points in the second half but were never unable to regain the lead, even despite being within one possession at multiple points in the second half.

The biggest difference maker in the contest proved to be in the paint, an area the Broncos dominated against an undersized Cowboy team. The Broncos completely crushed the Cowboys on the glass, finishing +12 in that category, despite these two teams being even on the glass in the first half. The Broncos also outscored the Cowboys 36-28 in the paint.
“They only had two offensive rebounds going into halftime, for them to go get eight in the second half really spoke to our lack of toughness and physicality and then they capitalized on that,” Wicks said.
“At the end of the day you need to rebound on the road to win games.”
Damarion Dennis led the way for the Cowboys with 16 points, with Meyer pacing him with 12 points while also finishing with a team-high seven rebounds. The Cowboys finished the contest just 7-of-26 (27%) from deep.
“We were close to having four guys in double figures again, but that requires a little bit more sharing, a little bit more selflessness and then trying to find the right guys who were hot,” Wicks said.
The Cowboys will start their final three-game stretch of the regular season against the aforementioned Air Force Falcons this Saturday.
