Fort Collins, CO – The day came early this year, the 118th Border Wars was the season opener for the Wyoming Cowboys Football team. The game took place in Fort Collins at Canvas Stadium. The Cowboys have had the boot for the last 8 out of 10 games are looking to make 9 out 11.
This season is a big one for not only the Cowboys but for the Rams. They are kicking off the season in a new division. As you may remember the CSU Rams were part of the Mountain West converse and now in this new season, they are part of the Pac 12. In addition, the Rams are welcoming a new head coach, +Jim Mora. Mora has been a coach for 25 and is coming to the Rams with hopes of turning the program around. Right behind coach Mora is Hauss Hejny who is starting for the CSU rams at QB, he is coming to CSU as a transfer from Oklahoma state
The game did not start the best way for the Cowboys but great for the Rams as they were able to go all the way on the open drive. The Cowboys were only able to answer with a field goal. The rest of the first quarter and much of the quarter the teams went back and forth but no one was successful until seconds after the 2-minute warning did CSU find a man to get into the in zone. Score at half time was Cowboys 6, CSU 14.
The Cowboys decided it was time to turn it up a notch and 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter QB Hughes, Tyler rush to the right for a gain of 9 yards to the in zone. To bring the score to 13-14. The third quarter continued to be a battle until CSU was able get a man wide open down the middle and got a touchdown, the Cowboys were not able respond and the score at the end of the 3rd quarter was 21-13, CSU.
The 4th quarter did not start the way the Cowboys wanted, the Rams were able to march down the field in 8 plays to then on the 9th have a 24-yard completion for a touchdown. Score 28-13, Rams. With seven minutes left in the quarter, CSU punted the ball to the Cowboys, only for Wyoming to be called for roughing the kicker. The Cowboys aren’t doing themselves any favors in this quarter. The rest of the night belonged to the Rams, once they got the ball back they were able take control of the field and the clock. The Rams go the ball back at 8:45 and scored with1:05 left on the clock to take the score to 35-13, and the Cowboys were not able to recover.
This loss doesn’t write the season off as a total bust. The Cowboys have the reset of the season to build momentum and come out with a big season. Tonight shows where the Cowboys need to put in the work and fix the penalties. The Cowboys have great games coming with Northern Colorado, next week. Did the season start on a high note, no, but the season is still young let see what our Cowboys can do!
