Rainy Day, Rough Loss

Cowboys lose in Central Michigan

The first quarter did not go as planned for the Cowboys, the Cowboys won the toss in deferred Central Michigan was able to get all the way down within field goal range and start the game off with a field goal. Why Wyoming was able to get the ball back, but was three and out Wyoming means defense was able to hold Central Michigan to a three and out also but was unable to do anything to finish out the first quarter. The second quarter was much of the same for the Cowboys. Eastern Michigan started the quarter off with the ball they were able to go the length of the field and secure a touchdown with a successful field goal. They kicked off to the Cowboys, but unfortunately the Cowboys turned it over on Downs again. Central Michigan took advantage of this to finish out the second quarter as they were able to get another touchdown with a successful field goal. This led the game into halftime with central Michigan: 14 – Wyoming: 0.

“I don’t think there was a lack of preparation or a lack of energy to play. What we didn’t do is respond to adversity when we got to that in a certain point in the first half the way we needed to,” UW head coach Jay Sawvel said. “We’ve got challenges that we’ve got to work through right now a little bit within not getting down in certain phases of the game. That’s been frustrating because I think that by and large, there’s maturity on the team, but our leadership, it’s got to be better. It can’t be us coming in at halftime and getting changed. It can’t be us coming in during a lightning delay and getting changed. We’ve got to be able to change it while we’re on the field.”

Halftime gave the Cowboys fans hope as the third quarter looked like the Cowboys were turning things around. They had much better offense and much better defense. But unfortunately, Central Michigan was still able to secure a touchdown with a successful field goal. The Cowboys were only able to answer back with their own field goal. Ending the third quarter 7 to 3. The fourth quarter was much better for the Cowboys as they were able to hold Central Michigan from scoring at all and they secured their own touchdown, but unfortunately, it was not enough for the Cowboys to come out on top for the game. The final score of the game was Wyoming 10 Central Michigan 24.

“I thought we fought hard in the second half. I thought we were much better in the second half,” Sawvel said. “But we also made a couple of critical mistakes in the second half that keep us from being in a position where we had a chance to win the game.”

The Cowboys will host Wyoming in the Mountain West opener next Saturday at war Memorial Stadium. Stay tuned for the branding iron to follow the Cowboys this season.
