Future Cowboys-Sheridan College

UW adds new program to Express Transfer Agreement

While we have the only University in the state of Wyoming here in Laramie, we are not the only option for higher education post high school graduation.

The Wyoming Community College Commission is home to eight colleges across the state. Five of these colleges are a part of something called the Express Transfer Agreement with UW.

According to UW, the ETA is a “pathway designed for students at participating community colleges in select majors to efficiently complete their bachelor’s degree.”

The ETA was established nearly two years ago in October of 2024. Laramie County Community College was the first partner for UW.

Recently, Sheridan College has become the latest to join the ETA with UW. On October 1, they announced their agreement. President Shane Reeves expressed his excitement for adding another school to the ETA pathway.

“We are excited to expand the Express Transfer Agreement to Sheridan College and continue building pathways for students at community colleges across the state to transfer to the University of Wyoming,” Reeves said. “ETA helps students arrive at UW academically prepared and connected to our university community, both of which are essential to their success.”

Sheridan College students can find pathways in criminal justice, exercise science, plant science, psychology, rangeland management and software development programs.

The other four colleges all offer between three and eight different programs. The programs then each hold separate degree offerings as well.

Western Wyoming College, located in Rock Springs, offers elementary education, business and accounting and psychology.

Central Wyoming College, located in Riverton, offers business, elementary education, psychology, computer science and social work.

Northwest College, located in Powell, offers anthropology, business and accounting, elementary education, political science, psychology and wildlife biology.

Laramie County Community College, located in Cheyenne, offers elementary education, secondary education, criminal justice, business and accounting, psychology, english, communications and computer science.

Students in these programs receive co-advising from both their current college and UW. This ensures a seamless transition of credits and making sure they are on the right track from both sides for their associates and bachelors degrees.

Beyond just the academics of it, the program is created to help the transition be easier from a social aspect. Students in the program are given access to campus events and opportunities, such as UW visit days to select campuses. At these events, students are able to connect with others on their same pathways, creating community before even being on campus here.

“We want the transition to UW to feel like the next step in a student’s journey rather than starting over somewhere new,” Sheridan College president Walt Tribley said. “Future Cowboys allows students to build those relationships early while receiving guidance from both institutions to make sure they are prepared academically when it is time to transfer.”

The University of Wyoming welcomed 818 transfer students during the current year of fall 2026. This is an increase of 6% last year. The ETA with community colleges from Wyoming continues to give more and more students opportunities to continue their journey at UW.
