If you are proud and eager to be a future teacher, you may be in the right profession. This world needs more teachers that care about the well-being of their students.

“You changed your major to what?” is a statement I have gotten numerous times, after changing my major to Secondary Education.

Why does wanting to be a teacher strike this negative reaction out of people?

Being a teacher is a lifelong journey of expanding your knowledge, and having the privilege to enlighten others. There is simply no deeper love for a subject than teaching it.

When a family member of mine tells me that I will not be making ample money in this profession, I get offended. I chose to attend college in order to obtain a job that I love doing. Not to have a job where I make a lot of money, but dread going to everyday. If you don’t have a college degree please don’t tell me what you believe that I should and should not major in.

If this world didn’t have the standardized “teacher” at the disposal of families, we would be doing a disservice to the community.

Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding tasks life can offer. Teaching is not about the money. Nor will it ever be. It is simply about wanting to share your passion with someone else. It’s the satisfaction you get when the student finally gets it.

Teachers are essential in making our learning universal. Yes of course there are certain things we can teach ourselves, but going to school allows children and young adults to experience the real world. Children are forced to get out and socialize, problem solve and work on tasks that might cause one cognitive dissonance.

Think about your favorite teachers. Which ones comes to mind?

Let me answer this for you. It was the man who took a little extra time after class to help you understand the themes of The Great Gatsby. Or it was the woman who saw you sitting alone on the playground that day your dog died, and played some tag with you. Do you see a pattern?

All the teachers that made an impact on you were the ones who helped, and connected with you. As a want to be teacher, I can guarantee there will be no better feeling than aiding a student in finally grasping a concept and watching them apply the knowledge to real life.

How are you going to make a positive difference in a child’s life?
