Shake it off.

A group on campus gets together one to two times per week to not only engage in exercise, but to foster an environment of creativity through movement. Mountain Women Belly Dancing Club is made of University of Wyoming Students and performs variously throughout campus and Laramie. The club encourages anyone in the community to join them to get in shape, get involved and meet new people.

Arianna Therese, a sophomore molecular biology major and Mountain Women Belly Dancing member said, “anyone can try it, and whether its your thing or not, it is a fun experience and a good workout. The club rides on previous knowledge of members, so every show is different with new dances and moves which keeps it very entertaining.”

Therese also said the club has been around for many years and is constantly changing with new faces. People are welcome to come just for fun or even to perform. They do a wide variety of styles and have people from all sort of different experience with belly dancing.

The Mountain Women Belly dancing at UW is a club that has performed at many different events. There latest event being the Women’s Leadership Conference Nov.7. They have also gone to Sumatra Belly Dance’s Hafla in Fort Collins, the international student’s association talent show, and the Indian Fashion show.

Jillian Keppler a freshmen communications major said, “I’ve been to a couple of events on campus and have seen them preform. They are really good. I think it’s a great dance style they are doing and hope it continues to expand.”

The club also has a few events planned for the future. The last event they have planned for the semester is a dance contest this Friday at 9 p.m. In the upcoming semester they plan on hosting their own Hafla, inviting troupes from different places in Wyoming and Colorado along with other events yet to be determined.

For the rest of the semester they will be meeting only on Thursdays. Next semester they will be holding practices twice a week with new times.

Additional information on time of practice, events, and other related activities can be found on the University of Wyoming Calendar as well as the Mountain Women Belly Dancing at UW Facebook page.
