Wet Hot American Summer: First Day at Camp

What it is about–Set before the events of the Wet Hot American Summer film, this show takes a satirical look at prequels by further exploring life at Camp Firewood.

Why you should watch it–Though all the performers have aged 14 years since the release of the original Wet Hot American Summer, the choice to make this show a prequel was clearly an intentional one. First Day at Camp is, like all David Wain and Michael Showalter projects, rife with absurdist and satirical humor. While those familiar with this style of humor will thoroughly enjoy the show, uninitiated viewers may find themselves yearning for the more tradition sitcom style of comedy. Viewers should definitely check out the original film before delving into the show, both to understand the mindset of the Wet Hot American Summer world and to help them catch all the referential jokes in the show.

The One I Love

What it is about–In an attempt to save their marriage, Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) take a weekend retreat at an estate recommended by their therapist. While there, they discover a mysterious guesthouse. They soon discover that whenever one of them enters the guesthouse alone, they encounter an idealized doppelganger of the other. The couple decides to further investigate each other’s doppelgangers, but this soon leads to jealousy and tension within their relationship.

Why you should watch it–Though not necessarily the most original doppelganger film on Netflix (see: The Double (2013)), this cerebral romance comes with great work from both Duplass and Moss. Their performances really sell the outlandish concept of the film, as well as retain the interest of the viewer. This film is not revolutionary by any means, but it is an interesting watch.

The Guest

What it is about–After claiming to have served in the army with with her now-deceased son, David (Dan Stevens) is invited into Laura Peterson’s home. Though he starts helping Laura’s family with their various problems, it soon becomes clear that he is not who he says he is.

Why you should watch it–The Guest is one of the best films available on Netflix right now. The movie defies standard genre classification, blending elements of action and mystery with elements of horror and drama. It is surprisingly intelligent, without being overbearingly so. In addition, it features terrific performances from Dan Stevens and Maika Monroe as Anna Peterson. While many films claim to be a heart-pounding experience, I can tell you from personal experience that this movie will actually deliver on that promise.
