Wyoming delivers solid performances

Over the weekend, UW track and field competed in the Colorado Open in Boulder. The Pokes contributed a number of impressive performances in the sprints and middle distance events on Saturday.

Jerayah Davis pulled out another win in the women’s 60 meters to continue her dominance from Friday. Bryce Ailshie moved up to No. 6 on the UW all-time list for the men’s indoor 800 meters.

“I feel like we had a solid day across the board,” head coach Bryan Berryhill following Saturday’s action. “There were good things in all event areas. We’ve got the conference championships in three weeks and we’ve got to continue to get better between now and when we go to Albuquerque.”

Davis clocked a time of 7.37 seconds in the women’s 60 meter final, breaking away from Colorado State’s Leah Fair, who had beaten Davis by a hundredth of a second in the prelims. The long jump champion from the Colorado Open, Ja’la Henderson, took seventh, posting a time of 7.75.

“Jerayah (Davis) keeps winning races,” Berryhill said. “That’s what we need from her, and she keeps delivering.”

In the women’s 200 meters, Melina Harris placed sixth with a time of 24.96. Heidi Pfoor posted a personal best in the 400 meters, finishing eighth at 58.20.

Jace Marx had yet another impressive performance for the men, improving his No. 8 UW all-time mark in the men’s 200 meters to 21.73 while taking third place. Marx also placed sixth in the men’s 400 meters with a personal best time of 49.43.

“Jace (Marx) is doing a great job,” Berryhill said. “He’s a kid who works hard every day in practice, and it’s really starting to show this indoor season on the track.”

Redshirt freshman Jackson Wood barely missed placing his name on Wyoming’s all-time top 10 list for the 400 meters, taking third place overall with a new personal record of 48.86. Sam Kirkeide finished in eighth place in the 60-meter dash, clocking in a 6.97, while Jordan Charles took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, checking in at 8.23.

Jonah Henry was the lone participant for UW in the men’s mile, finishing seventh with an adjusted time of 4:15.07.

A small group of Wyoming track and field athletes will race on a banked track for the first time this indoor season in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Don Kirby Invite on Feb. 10-11. The Pokes return home for the Rocky Mountain Classic on Feb. 17 before heading back to Albuquerque for the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships, which take place Feb. 23-25 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
