Swimming Pokes take on Rams at Border War

The Wyoming Cowgirls took on the CSU Rams in a swimming and diving border war. The Rams have not been able to beat the Cowgirls in a dual meet since 2008 and that streak remains alive today. With a final score of 166 to 132, the Cowgirls still reign over the Rams.

Wyoming started off the meet hot with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The Wyoming A team won this event with a time of 1:45.36. Wyoming was able to keep the pressure on the Rams with Talita TeFlan winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:29.19, and Samantha Burke winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time 1:55.71.

CSU’s first win of the night came in the 100-yard backstroke where Toni Thomas won with a time of 56.55. The 100-yard backstroke was followed by the 200-yard butterfly where Cowgirl swimmer Maria Harutjunjaun won with a time of 1:05.01.

The Rams were able to take the top spot in the next two events with Marie Goodwyn winning the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:05.23 and Rowan Hauber winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.80.

This brought the meet into the diving break, Wyoming diver Karla Contreras, coming off being named the Mountain West Diver of the Week, won the 3-meter competition with a season-best score of 332.8 points. Her highest scores being an 8/7.5 on a 2.8 degree of difficulty dive.

The first event after the break was the 100-yard freestyle and was won by CSU’s Hauber in a time of 52.35. Wyoming quickly turned the tide back in their favor taking he 1,2,3 sweep in the next event, the 200-yard backstroke. Marcella Gramcko took first with a time of 2:04.67.

Wyoming would finish with another 1,2,3 sweep only two events later in the 500-yard freestyle with Daniela Luna Rocha winning the event in a time of 5:08.25. The Rams were able to take the next two events with Goodwyn winning both the 100-yard fly in a time of 56.49 and the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:06.40.

Wyoming finished off the meet on a strong note with there A relay team anchored by Hannah Mclean-Leonard winning the last event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.86.
