Cowboys tame the Lobos at Homecoming Game

The Wyoming Cowboys Football Team took on the New Mexico Lobos at 5:32 P.M. on Oct. 28, at War Memorial Stadium during Homecoming weekend.

The Cowboys hold a record of (4-3, 2,1 in the Mountain West Conference) and the Lobos with a record of (3-4, 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference).

The game started with the visiting New Mexico Lobos kicking it off for a touchback to the 25-yard line where the Wyoming Cowboys started their first drive.

The opening drive consisted of a touchdown pass to Price that was taken back for a penalty on illegal man downfield against the Cowboys.

Cowboys forced to punt on 4th and 22 to New Mexico’s 24 with a 62- yard punt by Tim Zaleski.

New Mexico Lobos were unable to get a first down on their first drive forcing them to punt on fourth and two with a 51-yard punt to the Cowboy’s 17 with a 2-yard return by Austin Conway.

Trey Woods ran for back to back plays with a gain of just 2 yards that lead to a 21-yard completion to Conway on a third and long conversion.

The Cowboys forced to punt on their own 42 to New Mexico’s 21 for a 37-yard punt making their 2nd set of downs a scoreless drive.

The New Mexico Lobos first play of the down was an 18-yard pass completion by Delane Hart-Hohnson to the 39, followed by a forced punt by a batted down ball by Kevin Prosser.

The Cowboys unable to complete a third-down conversion results in a Zaleski punt to the 29-yard line for a 45-yard punt.

Lobo’s, Jordan passed to Chris Davis for a 14-yard completion on the Lobo’s 45-yard line.

The Cowboy’s defense with an interception on the play read by Carl Granderson for a 37-yard return to the Lobos 3-yard line.

Josh Allen QB sneak for a one-yard touchdown run making that his 4th rushing touchdown of the season.  The after-point attempt is completed by Cooper Rothe making it 7-0.

Penalty on the Lobos during the kick return for illegal blocking from the back forcing them to their own 8-yard line.

A five-yard pass to the 23-yard line ends the first quarter with the Cowboys up 7-0.

The Cowboys start the second quarter with a forced interception on a Lobo’s third and 7 by No. 6 Markus Epps with a 2-yard.

A Josh Allen pass to Price for a 11-yard reception with a penalty on the Lobos for illegal hands to the face for half the distance to the goal resulting to the Cowboy’s ball on the 9-yard line.

Another forced penalty on the Lobos with holding on the defense in the end zone resulted to automatic first down for the Cowboys

Unnecessary roughness on the PAT led to a 15-yard penalty on the Cowboys kick off that went to the Lobos 20 return to the 40.

The Lobos unable to get a first down with the forced punt for a 50-yard touchback starting the Cowboy’s offense on their own 20-yard line.

The Cowboys unable to make a connection on third down forcing a 33-yard punt which was recovered by Wyoming’s at the 16- yard line by Braden Smith putting the Cowboys back in possession.

Allen hands the ball to Austin Fort for a 2-yard rushing touchdown with a PAT good by Rothe making the score 21-0 in favor of the Cowboys with Fort’s second touchdown of the game.

The Cowboys kick off to the 6-yard line with a 17-yard return by the Lobos starting at their own 23 yard line.

The Lobos unable to convert on third and long for the drive ending with a 75-yard punt to end zone giving the Cowboys the ball back on their own 20.

The first down play with a 14-yard reception caught by James Price resulted in a booth review for potential targeting by Lobos defender Jacob Girgle.

The review on the play was confirmed with targeting resulting in the ejection of Jacob Girgle.

The next set of downs start on the 49-yard line after the 15-yard targeting penalty. Josh Allan makes a 31-yard completion to jimmy Price to the 20-yard line.

The Cowboys able to get another first down on the screen option to the 11-yard line.

Josh Allen throws to Austin Fort in the end zone for a 11-yard touchdown, making that his third touchdown with the PAT by Rothe good making the score 28-0.

The Cowboy’s kick it off to the 6-yard line with a 24-yard return by the Lobos to the 30-yard line.  The Lobos first drive of the play ends with an interception by Andrew Wingard with a return of 14 yards to the Lobos 19-yard line

Josh Allen pulls a QB fake and throws the ball to the end zone which is caught by John Okowili for a 19-yard touchdown.  The PAT is good by Rothe making the score 35-0.

The Cowboys kick off to the back of the end zone with a touchback starting the Lobos on the 25-yard line.

The Cowboys defense continue to be relentless towards the Lobos forcing their fifth turnover of the game with an interception by Andrew Wingard.

Josh Allen throws a 38-yard bullet to C.J. Johnson in the back of the end zone for another touchdown.  The PAT is good by Rothe making the score 42-0.  The one play drive touchdown was clocked in for 7 seconds.

This was the second time in this season that the Cowboys have scored 30 points in the first half of the game.

The UW Cowboys end the first half of the game against a scoreless New Mexico Lobos with a score of 42-0.

The Second half goes underway with the kick off the Cowboys to the third-yard line return by the Lobos to the 19 for a 16-yard return.

The Lobos are forced to punt on fourth and two after being unable to connect for a first down.  The punt was caught at the Cowboys 6-yard line for no gain on the play.

The Cowboys followed with a 3 and out for a 42-yard fair catch on the Lobos 49-yard line.

The Lobos continue to struggle on offense with the pressure from the Cowboy’s defense increasing with their sixth forced turnover by Tyler Hall with the interception on the 20-yard line.

Unsportsmanlike conduct after the play by the kicking team results into a 15-yard penalty placing the Lobos on their own 31 for the start of the drive.

The Lobos come up with an 18-yard run by Tyrone Owens on the opening drive putting them on the Cowboys 39-yard line.

Lamar Jordan rushes for a 17 -yard first play placing them on the Cowboy’s 11-yard line.

The Lobos opening play was pushed back five yards after a penalty for illegal formation putting them 1st and 15 on the 16-yard line.

The end of the 3rd quarter puts the Lobos on the 12-yard line with second and 11

The Lobos are unable to see the back of the end zone after the Cowboys defense sacked the Lobo’s quarterback making it fourth and 24.

The Lobos are able to put points on the board after a 42-yard field goal scored by Jason Sanders.

The Lobos kick off for the first time in the second half to the end zone for a touchback and a Cowboys procession on the 25-yard line.

Trey Woods was able to rush for an 8-yard run and reach a first down after a second rush of 2 yards placing the Cowboys on their own 36-yard line.

The Cowboys unable to convert on third down. They will punt out of bounds on the 9-yard line for a 35-yard punt.

Jordan with a 10-yard scramble for the first down puts Lobosobos on their own 21-yard line.

The following set of downs results to a punt on the Lobos own 24-yard line to the 44-yard line out of bounds for a 35-yard punt.

The last minutes of the game consisted of short plays by the Cowboys offense that slowed down the clock until the final score was 42-3.

“It was a tremendous performance for the defense tonight,” coach Bohl, after tonight domination over the New Mexico Lobos, said.

“Redemption was one of the main things we have thought about ever since the loss against them last season.”  Wingard expressed after being asked about thoughts going back to last year’s game against the Lobos to this season’s performance.

The Cowboy’s defense ended with a season-high of seven forced turnovers against the Lobos.

The Cowboys also met a record high score in the first half since 2011 with 42 points in a single half.

Josh Allen threw for a third time in this season with 4 touchdown passes, three of those going to Wyoming raised, Austin Fort.

“I’ve waited so long to prove myself and switching from quarterback to tight end was a tough transition but I can give credit for my performance tonight to the defense for setting us up on the other teams half.”

The win against the Lobos helped placement standings within the Mountain West Conference.
