New student involvement center opens in Union

The University of Wyoming is holding the grand opening for the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) in the Union Fire Place Lounge today from 3 to 5 p.m.

At the grand opening attendees will have the option to take their own tours of the CSIL offices where they will find raffles for a variety of prizes. Free drinks and appetizers will also be served at the event.

“The three big prizes are two $50 gift cards to the bookstore, two $50 dining gift cards and a pair of tickets to the upcoming Jesse McCartney concert,” said CSIL Director Jeremy Davis.

CSIL was created with the goal of consolidating and strengthening on campus activities as well as community activities and brings them into a central area on campus in the Union.

“It’s a good way to incorporate and get students to know what we are doing,” RSO/RSL Program Advisor Jacque Rickett said. “A lot of students don’t know what CSIL is and this event is a good way to make sure they know what is and why we are all combining under one roof. It also combines us into one entity and brings the Union into it which I think is good.”

Davis, the director, also pointed out the wide scope of activities and services that CSIL covers.

“CSIL brings together 10 different student offices, that existed in different parts of the university, to create the best co-curricular experience for students,” Davis wrote in an email to the Branding Iron. “As one department, these offices can be efficient with limited resources to provide an integrated student experience. … It also makes it easier for current and incoming students to find engagement opportunities. For example, we’ve revised our website, published testimony to highlight different ways to get involved, streamlined social media, and will be developing new orientation videos.”

On campus opportunities previously found at locations throughout campus can now be found at CSIL. Individual students looking for on-campus employment, resources around campus and ways to volunteer on a local or global scale can visit CSIL for information. The center also offers information to students who want to know more about student government on campus.

One of the more encompassing aspects of the new CSIL center is the ability to help RSOs coordinate, work together and communicate to organize events around campus.

“We are creating a student leadership board to help communication between groups,” Davis said. He also noted the potential for students in multiple groups.

“It brings a lot of groups together where there are individuals involved in more than one group. It enhances opportunities and collaborations between groups,” Davis said.

CSIL can be contacted by e-mail at csilmktg@uwyo.edu and by phone at 307-766-3117.
