ACES hosts teacher fair for grads

Graduate students in the education program have an opportunity to meet with school district recruiters today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center for a Teacher Fair.

Students are expected to dress professionally with multiple resumes on hand to employers and can sign up for interviews to be conducted Friday after the fair.

“Just be prepared to come in and talk about your student teaching experience, why you want to be a teacher and how you’re a good fit for that district,” said Jo Chytka, director for the Advising, Career, Exploratory Studies Center (ACES).

Schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nevada and Wyoming will be present at the event. The list of schools planning on arriving can be viewed on the Handshake website (Wyoming.JoinHandshake.com). However, with a winter storm approaching, the list is not final. Students may also prepare for potential interviews by researching the participating states and their schools on the website.

ACES hosts a total of seven job fairs throughout the year in subject areas including pharmacy, STEM, business and teaching. Out of all these fairs, Chytka says that this fair is especially fun.

“I love this job fair because they’re actually interviewing for jobs, and so sometimes students get offers and they walk out like ‘I have a job!’ and that’s really fun,” said Chytka. “But I just love the energy. All of the employers that come to campus are really impressed with our students with your quality of education and the work ethic and all the things that people bring to an opportunity.”

The students are usually nervous attending fairs like these, Chytka said, but it’s great to watch the interactions “to see what could happen after having a conversation with someone.”

The districts for this year’s fair are hiring for a multitude of positions, including but not limited to elementary, middle and high school positions, special education, school counselors and psychologists, administrative positions and more. This job fair is looking for full-time employees, but Chytka said that their other job fairs and ACES have other opportunities for students as well.

“For students that are looking for summer jobs or internships across the field, and not just in education, [ACES] are happy to help,” said Chytka. “We have lots of resources available so you can go to the ACES website, you can send us an email, you can meet with people, but now is the time to start thinking about what you’re going to do if you’re graduating and you haven’t done anything yet, or if you’re looking for a summer job or internship.”

More information about the fair and other resources is available on the ACES website at UWyo.edu/aces/.
