Film contest calls for student shorts

The 7220 Entertainment Films Committee is currently calling for student-produced film submissions for its third-annual Student Short Film Festival.

The committee is looking for short films of various genres, story lines and characters to bring focus to student artists and filmmakers who do not have many opportunities to showcase their works. Submissions are open until 5 p.m. April 5.

In the past, 7220 has seen films from gripping murder mysteries to comedies to informative video essays. Expensive filming equipment is not necessary as smartphone cameras have changed the game in student filmmaking and filmmaking of all sorts.

“Creativity can mean a lot of things when it comes to these films, but I think the biggest thing we are looking for is something entertaining and original with a lot of style,” 7220 Student Films Coordinator Hannah Lewis said.

The film festival is also an opportunity for other filmmakers to meet new artists, learn about future resources and techniques and gain new ideas for future projects.

Any UW student in good standing with the University may submit a film and must perform a substantial role in the production of the film. Entries must be between five to 20 minutes long to be eligible for awards and must be in English or subtitled in English. Filmmakers must have all actors sign consent forms for their image to be used.

“Anyone can make a really good film, and even if you don’t think that it is worthy, submit it anyways,” Lewis said. “Practice and exposure can really make a difference in how you make your films and how confident you are in them.”

Decisions regarding content, time and eligibility are at the discretion of the selection committee, which will preview all films. Explicit content is not permitted, and films may not endorse subject matter that discriminates on the basis of race, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation or other protected categories.

“Films that stand out typically are really visually gripping,” Lewis said. “Good cinematography and composition can really make a difference.”

Students wishing to submit a film must fill out a Submission Information Sheet to be eligible. Films should be submitted to the Campus Activities Center (CAC), located in Wyoming Union room 012, during their normal business hours.
