Students compete at Greek Week

Last week the chapters of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) on campus participate in various games, challenges and talent shows in an annual series of events known as Greek Week.

This year’s Greek Week theme was “Through the Decades,” and partnered teams of fraternity and sorority chapters competed together for Greek Week victory. This year the victorious Greek Week team was “Those 70s Bros,” comprised of Alpha Gamma Rho and Pi Kappa Alpha.

“Greek week is an annual event that is dedicated to celebrate, recognize and showcase our values and accomplishments in the community,” said Panhellenic Secretary Katie Kelley. “The week is centered around four values in our community, which include building connections, learning and growing, leading with integrity and giving back.”

Greek Week is a tradition on the University of Wyoming campus, dating back to the 1960s, that allows chapter members to engage in a fun, competitive way. Over the course of the week, through a variety of events, teams gain points in hopes to come out of Greek Week victorious.

Some staple campus events of the week were the Cardboard Regatta, where teams build a boat out of only Duct tape and cardboard to then be raced across Corbett Pool. Another was the Greek Week talent competition, where performances can range from dancing and singing to skits and magic while relating back to the theme.

“This week brings an entirely different level of school and FSL pride, participation and excitement,” said Kelley. “Due to its competitive spirits teams go all out not only to win but to give back to our community.

“It is a time of celebration for our accomplishments throughout the year within our own organizations and across the community. For us, it is one of the greatest displays of what are community values and how strong our FSL and Laramie community is together.”

Not only does the competition allow the FSL community to come together, Kelley said, but it also helps the greater Laramie community through hosting a blood drive and fundraising for United Way of Albany County.

“Giving back to the greater campus and Laramie community as one of our values has a large focus with Greek Week.” said Kelley, “We know how the positive impact we can have on our greater community when we join together and are dedicated and focused to making a difference.”

Greek week is an event unlike any other within the FSL community, as it brings not just the Greek life community together socially, but the greater Laramie community is brought together through the philanthropic endeavors.
