Women’s Golf goes to MW Championship

The Wyoming women’s golf team headed down to California for the week to compete in the Mountain West Championship. The tournament was held at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage CA.

The nine teams involved were San Diego State, Nevada, UNLV, San Jose State, Fresno State, Boise State, New Mexico, Colorado State and Wyoming. Each team brought five players to compete. San Diego and San Jose were the only teams that were nationally ranked with SD at 43rdand SJ at 27th.

The tournament started Monday April 15th.  In round one San Jose took the lead, ending with a score of 299, putting them +20 over par. San Diego finished four strokes behind with a score of 304, Nevada took third place at 305, fourth place went to UNLV at 310. Wyoming, Fresno State, and Boise State tied, each with a score of 313. New Mexico ended at 318 and CSU took last at 321.

The second round saw a little more spread between the teams. San Diego stole first place away from San Jose with a score of 295, +16 over par. UNLV also got a score under 300, but just barely, they ended round 2 at 299. Fresno State hit 300 on the dot for third place, Nevada scored 303 for fourth place. San Jose stumbled in round 2, scoring a 308 which put them in fifth place. Boise scored 310, New Mexico scored 317 and Wyoming and CSU tied at 319 each.

The final round was a nail biter between Nevada and San Diego. San Diego felt the pressure and ended with a score of 306. On the other hand, Nevada fell into a rhythm and scored a 297. Sadly, for Nevada, it just wasn’t enough with the total score for San Diego being 904 and Nevada with 905. UNLV placed third at 911, San Jose in fourth with 912, also a close score. Fresno took fifth at 921,  Boise ended in 6 at 931, New Mexico in seventh with 945, CSU in eighth with 949 and finally Wyoming in ninth with 958.

There were many golfers to pay attention to over the course of the tournament. Even though they ended in fifth, Fresno’s Brigitte Thibault took first overall. San Diego’s Sara Kjellker and Fernanda Escauriza were top five, which helped lead their team to taking first.
