UW infringes upon students’ freedom of speech

In light of recent events, it is apparent that the University of Wyoming thinks it is okay to infringe upon students’ freedom of speech. Unlike the university, the Branding Iron staff does not think so.

There was an instance in which one of our writers interviewed a Resident Assistant (RA) for an article that had nothing to do with university living or anything related to this individual’s job.

However, after the individual spoke to the BI and the article was posted with their name, the individual was threatened to be fired.

Forcing Residence Assistants to remain silent with the fear of being fired is morally wrong.

Unfortunately, in the workplace outside of universities, it is normal for employees under certain jobs to have their freedom of speech infringed under contract. The BI understands this is important under certain circumstances with certain issues being discussed.

However, the RA interviewed was not asked about the dorms or on-campus apartments at all. The individual was only referred to as a RA because their position required them to be tested more frequently than others.

The Branding Iron values the freedom of speech and the freedom of press unconditionally.

On campus, the Branding Iron Newspaper keeps the University of Wyoming in check to make sure that no abuses of power go without scrutiny.
